EXCEL SERIES CLASS RULES 2012
The aim of the "Excel Cup" is foremost to provide a safe low cost entry level Circuit Racing format that is fun and provides a competitive environment where drivers are able to improve their "Race Craft". The drivers’ time will improve through learning car control and basic vehicle setup. Overly aggressive driving and overspending competitors are not encouraged to participate.
1.1 VEHICLE BODY SHELL
•Hyundai Excel - 1986 to 2000
•Any number of doors.
•Body to be unmodified - no cutting of any bracing
-All bracing including bonnet to remain stock
•Signwriting is encouraged
•The strut towers must NOT be modified - no redrilling top of towers front or rear
1.2 DRIVELINE
•Stock Excel Engine
•Rebuilt engines must only be over bored the first oversize (max 20 thou), big bore engines are not permitted
•Stock auto or manual excel gearbox
•Limited slip and locked diffs are not permitted
•Cylinder Head, valves and cam are to be standard
•A Heavy duty clutch is permitted, but must be of similar design to the original clutch, race clutches are not permitted
•The flywheel must remain the original weight
1.3 BRAKES
•Stock excel brakes (rear drums)
•Front disc pads and rear brake linings are free
•Slotted or cross drilled rotors are not permitted
•Brake lines are free
1.4 EXHAUST & INTAKE
•Exhaust Manifold and the twin primaries are to be original excel, the rest of the exhaust is free subject to lakeside noise requirements (95DB)
•Extractors are expressly forbidden.
•Intake manifold is to be original excel, the rest of the air intake is free before the original throttlebody and air flow meter.
•Pod filters are permitted
•Throttlebody is to be standard - factory as per model (i.e. Twin-Cam throttle body on twin cam motor)
•Forced Induction is not permitted
1.5 FUEL AND IGNITION
•Carbies and injection is to be factory - Excel as per the model of car
•Injectors are to be factory - Excel as per the model of car
•Ignition is to be factory - Excel as per the model of car
•Spark plugs and leads are free
•Computer (where fitted) is to be factory - Excel as per the model of car
•Fuel regulators are free
•Fuel pump is free and may be fitted externally of the tank
•Fuel lines are free
•Surge Tanks / Swirl Pots are not permitted
1.6 BATTERY
•The Battery can remain in the factory position or be relocated to the inside of car and to be secured and placed within a battery box
•Battery type is free
•Positive Battery terminals must be insulated
•Battery location must be marked with Blue triangle
1.7 COMPUTER CHIPS AND MODULES
•Chipping and wiring harness modifications are not permitted.
1.8 FUEL
•Racing fuel is not permitted
•Fuel additives are not permitted
•Octane boosters are not permitted
•Fuel must be available from the bowser at most service stations in SEQ. Octane levels 91, 95 and 98 are permitted. Bowser Ethanol blended fuel is permitted, for example E10
1.9 AERODYNAMICS
•The factory Hyundai Excel low profile rear wing may be maintained or fitted.
•All other aerodynamic aids are not permitted
1.10 STEERING
•Power steering is permitted
•Steering wheels are free but must meet ADR, FIA or SFI standards.
1.11 STRUT BRACES
•Front strut braces are not permitted
•Rear strut towers can only be tied together as part of the roll cage. A separate rear strut brace is not permitted
1.12 LIGHTS
•The original headlights, brake lights, tail lights and indicators are to be kept in place and in working condition.
1.13 INTERIOR
•Subject to the items listed below portions of the interior trim may be removed including hood lining when a full race seat, harness and roll cage are installed in the car. Cars that utilise the original seat and seatbelt must maintain full interior trim.
•The front door trims must remain in place. Suitable safe replacements are permitted
•The original dash is to be retained. Suitable safe replacement dash is permitted on existing cars if a new dash is unavailable, the new dash must be approved by a suitable person as safe. Newly built cars must maintain the original dash, dash mat glued down
•Race seat and harness are permitted - In fact they are encouraged when installed correctly and in conjunction with a roll cage
•Replacement seats and harness must comply with a suitable design standard, eg ADR, SFI, FIA. The seats and harness must be suitable for motorsports applications. Fitting must be to the manufacturers recommendations. Seats are to be fixed back style.
1.14 ROLL CAGES
•Roll cages are encouraged
•If you attend circuit racing you will need a roll cage (see Excel Cup)
•We suggest a CAMS compliant cage as some of our events use CAMS Insurance. As per CAMS specifications - strongly recommend 6 point cage.
1.15 MINIMUM WEIGHT
•Minimum wet weight is to be 900kg
1.16 GLASS
•ADR compliant Glass must be maintained
•Use of light weight window materials is not permitted.
1.17 TELEMETRY
•Live telemetry is not permitted
•Stored Video & other GPS style telemetry is permitted - eg performance box or video box etc.
•Oil and Water temp and pressure gauges or warning lights are permitted
•After - market Tacho may be fitted
1.18 COOLING
•Oil Coolers are permitted
•A Larger radiator may be fitted provided that the original fixing points are used
•Radiator Hoses are free
1.19 TYRES
•Normal road tyres of any brand
•Retreads are expressly forbidden
•Slicks or semi slicks not allowed
•Any tyre that is designated as a race tyre or on a race tyre list is not permitted
•There is no restriction on tyre width but the tyres must fit inside the guards without modifying the guards, suspension or steering components
•Any tyre with a RRP of more than $300.00 is not permitted
•Treadwear rating must be 200 or higher unless approved below.
•The Federal RSR is approved for Excel Cup Drivers Championship and QR Excel challenge vehicles.
1.20 APPROVED TYRE LIST FOR SPRINTS
•Normal road tyres of any brand as noted above
•Federal Hero HZ1
•Federal FD 595 (Drift Competition Spec)
•Federal 595EVO (Street Competition)
•Achilles 123
•Talon Sport
•Cat Sport
•Federal 595 RSR
Note: The Khumo KU36 is not permitted in the Stock Excel Class for sprints or circuit racing.
1.21 WHEELS
•Wheels must be maximum 15" diameter
•There is no restriction on wheel width
•Alloy wheels are permitted
•Wheel Spacers are NOT permitted.
1.22 SUSPENSION
•Racing suspension is not permitted
•Coil Over Style struts are not permitted
•After-market springs are permitted provided that they are readily available at retail outlets
•After-market shocks are permitted provided that they are readily available at retail outlets
•Adjustable suspension is not permitted
•Camber pins are permitted to achieve negative camber
•Original mounting points must be maintained for all components
•Bottom of struts may be slotted
Cut springs are allowed
1.23 SWAYBARS
•It is permissible to install readily retail available after market swaybars up to 18mm in thickness on the rear and 22mm thick on the front
•Original mounting points must be maintained for all components
•Swaybars must be non adjustable.
Any modification not specifically noted above is NOT allowed. Please check before you make any changes that may place your car outside the rules.
EXCEL CUP CIRCUIT RACING ADDITIONAL REGULATIONS
There will be 10 Race meetings held in 2012 where Excel Cup cars can compete. You do not need to be a member of the Excel Drivers Association to compete as long as your vehicle complies with Excel Cup Specifications.
There will be 5 one day Top Gear Meets- 3 at Lakeside and 2 at Queensland Raceway.
There will be 5 two day QRDC meets, 3 at Queensland Raceway and 2 at Lakeside.
The Excel Cup Drivers Championship will be held over nine Rounds, 5 at Lakeside and 4 at Queensland Raceway. The winner of this championship gains the right to display car number 1 for the next season.
We will be holding an Endurance Race at Queensland Raceway at one of the QRDC meets. The details f this meet are yet to be finalised, but it will be held either June or July at this stage.
A new innovation for 2012 is the introduction of the Queensland Raceways Excel Challenge; this is a championship within a championship and is aimed at those drivers on a small budget who would not be able to run all 10 rounds for the year.
The QR Excel Challenge will be contested over 4 rounds and will be held at Queensland Raceway only, to be in the running for this championship you can only compete at the 4 QR Excel Challenge meets plus the Endurance Meet.
Vehicles that are competing in the Excel Cup Drivers Championship or QR Excel Challenge circuit racing events will need to meet the following additional requirements.
2.1 ROLL CAGE
•Roll cages must be minimum 4 point for Top Gear Race events. A 6 point Roll Cage is recommended
•Drivers intrusion bars must be fitted.
•All bars must be contained within the Cabin.
•Barwork must be welded in
•Steel must be CDS or CDW.
•Molly cages are not permitted.
•Cages must be manufactured to SFI, FIA, Andra, CAMS or other suitable specifications.
2.2 RACE SEAT
•Fixed back race seat to SFI, FIA or Australian Standards
•Seat mountings to a minimum ADR requirements
2.3 RACING HARNESS
•Minimum 4 point racing harness to SFI, FIA or Australian Standards
•Mountings to ADR requirements
2.4 WINDOW NETS
•Are recommended
-may be installed on the drivers door (when installed on the drivers door the door must be able to be opened with the window net in place)
- 2012 season where no window net is fitted the drivers window must be raised with a maximum 50mm gap at the top before entering the track, any driver found to lower the drivers window after entering the track will be black flagged (first offence) (excluded from the meet second offence)
- Window nets will be mandatory for 2013 season.
2.5 APPAREL
•Must be suitable for circuit racing
•Single Layer Nomex Race suit to the following standards - SFI, Nomex underwear is recommended with single layer Nomex race suits
•Race boots to SFI or FIA standards
•Race Gloves to SFI or FIA standards
2.6 OIL CATCH CAN
•Suitable oil catch can, must be fitted
2.7 BATTERY ISOLATOR/ENGINE KILL SWITCH
This will become mandatory from 1 July 2012
•Battery isolator/ignition kill switch must be fitted
•Battery isolator/ignition kill switch must be able to be operated by the driver when in normal seated position
•Battery isolator/ignition kill switch must be fitted with a remote cable which is to be located near the drivers A pillar and be able to operated from the exterior of the vehicle
•Remote battery isolator/ignition kill switch cable must be identified by a blue triangle with red lightning bolt sticker
2.8 TOW POINTS
•Suitable tow points to front and rear are required
•Tow points to be marked with red tow stickers
2.9 TYRES
•The Control tyre for circuit racing is pending - to be confirmed subject to a suitable tyre deal
2.10 SPONSORS
•The Series Sponsors Windscreen Banner must be displayed at all events, to be advised by race promoter
2.11 COMPLIANCE INSPECTION
•All vehicles must pass a compliance inspection
